April, 2004 Keenan Adams, a fifth-grader at Grace Christian Academy, earned his title as the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) Youngest World Slam turkey holder in 2001, and Saturday he showed his prowess as a turkey hunter for Turkey Call TV. Adams is the youngest person on record to have killed at least one each of the six sub-species of wild turkeys. The footage will be aired sometime next year on Outdoor Life Network (OLN) and other networks that air Turkey Call TV shows. Adams killed an 18-pound Eastern wild turkey with an eight and a half-inch beard and one-inch spurs on International Paper land before the TV cameras. Adams was accompanied on the hunt by his father, Roy Adams; immediate past chairman of the NWTF, Michael Tull; Robert McCullough, president of the Lake Seminoles Spurs chapter; and Turkey Call TV producer Brian Godfrey.
The hunt that began before dawn’s light on Saturday, the first day of turkey season in Georgia, was over by 9 a.m., McCullough said, when Adams shot his big bird using a new Benelli M1 Field Steady Grip, 12 gauge shotgun with Federal Premium Ammunition #5 shot. Using a Woodhaven mouth caller, Adams imitated the sounds of a hen, or a female turkey, pecking around in order to draw the gobbler, as a male turkey is known, within range of his gun. “This is in direct opposition to nature,” Tull explained. “In nature, the hen goes to the gobbler, not the other way around.” Keenan, the son of Roy and Maggie Adams of Bainbridge, turned 11 on Feb. 14 this year, and said he has been hunting and actually took his first turkey since 1998 when he was 5 years old. He also enjoys soccer, baseball and fishing. And what is his secret for successful turkey hunting? “Patience,” said Adams.
